DESCRIPTION

1,4 Butanediol (BDO) is a versatile compound primarily used as a comonomer in polymerization reactions and in the production of complex plastic compounds. It can be derived from formaldehyde and acetylene, propene and maleic anhydride, or through the fermentation of renewable raw materials. BDO and its derivatives have a wide range of applications in the chemical industry, including the manufacture of technical plastics, polyurethanes, solvents, electronic chemicals, and elastic fibers. The hydroxyl group at each end of the BDO molecule reacts with various mono- and bifunctional reagents. For example, it reacts with dicarboxylic acids to form polyesters, with diisocyanates to produce polyurethanes, or with phosgene to create polycarbonates. Additionally, BDO serves as a key building block for the synthesis of polyester polyols and polyether polyols.
