CAS: 126-73-8

Tri-N-Butyl Phosphate (TNBP) is an industrially very useful chemical compound, which has been widely used as a solvent and softener in many chemical processes. It is an organic phosphate that is generally miscible in many solvents, usually in water, and because of this reason, it performs well to improve the properties of certain chemical materials. Therefore, TNBP has its distinctive molecules and use in industrial application, making it different from the related compounds like triisobutyl phosphate (TIBP), mostly in its wide range of uses, such as defoaming in concrete.

Increasing Applications in the Construction

Industry One of the most significant needs for Tri-N-Butyl Phosphate is observed in the construction industry. More prominently in the production of concrete. It is the key defoaming agent used in concretes. In turn, TNBP helps to provide a clear surface for the concrete paving operation by preventing foaming. Furthermore, it results in a better quality finish and surface. It also helps to keep the production cost of the product low. This is achieved by producing a higher quality of raw material, which requires fewer handling costs. Another significant application that has a huge volume of demand drop is in the production of gypsum board and plaster compounds. TNBP is used for stabilization and to improve the consistency of the cementitious and gypsum-board mixtures.

Other Key Application of TNBP

  • Agriculture: Tri-N-Butyl Phosphate is used in pesticide formulations to improve the deformability and foam reduction.

  •  Plastics and Rubber: It is used as a plasticizer to produce more flexible plastics and rubber products.

  • HI&I (Household, Industrial, and Institutional): It is used in formulating cleaning solutions and safety-related products.

  • Lubricants and Grease: Tri N-Butyl Phosphate is used as an additive in hydraulic fluids, engine oils, lubricants, and other greases to improve the performance and stability of the product.

  • Petroleum and Gas: In oil field applications, TNBP is used as an emulsion stabiliser and dispersant.

  •  Textiles: Tri-N-Butyl Phosphate is used as a softening agent in the synthetic fiber industry. In which it is used to improve the softness of the fabric.

  •  Medical and Pharmaceutical: It is used as an intermediate for the production of pharmaceuticals. It is also used in medical plastics, especially in formulations designed for the controlled release of active ingredients.

  • Paints and Coating: It is used as a solvent or plasticizer to increase consistency, surface readiness, and finish zone stability.
