Methanesulfonic Acid (MSA)

PRODUCT OVERVIEW

DESCRIPTION

Methanesulfonic Acid (MSA), also known as methanesulphonic acid or mesylic acid, is the simplest member of the alkylsulfonic acid family, recognized for its strong acidity and non-oxidizing nature. This organic acid acts as a critical link between organic and inorganic chemistry, featuring a single carbon atom in its methyl group, which classifies it as a C1 compound in organic chemistry. MSA is fully miscible with water and organic solvents such as alcohols and diethyl ether, making it exceptionally versatile. Industrially, MSA finds applications in catalysis (polymerization and other organic reactions), electroplating (achieving uniform metal deposits), fine chemical synthesis (API salt preparation), and cleaning (rust and scale removal). Its role as a reaction solvent in acidic, non-oxidizing environments and as a neutralizing agent for soluble salt formation further underscores its adaptability. The salts derived from MSA, known as methanesulfonates or mesylates, extend its functionality across diverse processes.
