Cyclohexanedimethanol (CHDM) is an aliphatic diol with a unique structure, featuring a cyclohexane ring and two hydroxymethyl groups (-CH2-OH) on opposite ends. It is miscible with water and alcohol, soluble in ketones, and insoluble in ethers and aliphatic hydrocarbons. Its low melting point allows it to exist in solid, liquid, or molten states, making it a vital material in the chemical industry. CHDM is used in saturated and unsaturated polyester resins, coatings for appliances and automobiles, and polyester polyols for polyurethane applications. It is also essential in gel coats, molding compounds, lubricants, hydraulic fluids, and cosmetics. Produced via two-stage hydrogenation of dimethyl terephthalate, CHDM exists in cis and trans isomers depending on the catalyst.
