This stimulating alkaloid naturally occurs in over 60 plants, including coffee beans and tea leaves, as well as in seeds, nuts, and legumes. Structurally related to other methylxanthines, such as theophylline and theobromine, caffeine acts as a smooth muscle relaxant in the bronchi, a central nervous system stimulant, a cardiac muscle stimulant, and a diuretic.
