DESCRIPTION

Glycine is the simplest proteinogenic amino acid and the only achiral one, with a hydrogen atom as its side chain. This versatile amino acid plays several critical roles in the body, serving as a nutraceutical, a hepatoprotective agent, and a modulator of NMDA receptors. Additionally, glycine functions as an inhibitor of the enzyme glycine hydroxymethyltransferase (EC 2.1.2.1) and acts as an essential neurotransmitter, fundamental metabolite, and micronutrient. As an alpha-amino acid and a member of the serine family, glycine is also a conjugate base of glycinium and a conjugate acid of glycinate.
