Acrylic monomers are small molecules containing a vinyl group with an ester or carboxylic acid substituent, essential for creating polymers through a polymerization process. These monomers are typically colorless or yellowish transparent liquids, soluble in organic solvents, and play a key role in the production of materials such as paints, coatings, adhesives, and plastics. In industrial applications, acrylic monomers are used in the manufacture of paints and coatings (providing water resistance, flexibility, and weathering resistance), durable adhesives and sealants, and versatile transparent plastics like acrylic. They are also crucial in the nail industry, where they are used to form the hardened structure of acrylic nails.
