Gamma-Butyrolactone (GBL)

DESCRIPTION

GBL, a colorless, hygroscopic liquid with a faint odor, is widely used in the production of various chemicals, including the popular solvent N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP). GBL is also a common ingredient in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and herbicides. It is known to be metabolized into a powerful sedative and relaxant compound, γ-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB), which is used medically to treat sleep disorders. GBL is also a popular recreational drug due to its relaxing effects, which can be similar to those of barbiturates. However, the misuse of GBL can lead to serious health problems, including addiction, respiratory depression, and even death.
