DESCRIPTION
Methyl acrylate is an organic compound and the methyl ester of acrylic acid. It is a colorless liquid with a distinctive acrid odor and is primarily used to produce acrylate fibers for synthetic carpets. It also serves as a reagent in synthesizing various pharmaceutical intermediates. Due to its tendency to polymerize, methyl acrylate typically contains an inhibitor like hydroquinone. This compound is a clear, volatile liquid with slight water solubility and complete solubility in alcohols, ethers, and many organic solvents. While it can polymerize through heat, light, ionic, or high-energy methods, free radical initiation is the most common technique. Methyl acrylate is utilized in creating polymers with various properties, including rigid, flexible, ionic, nonionic, hydrophobic, or hydrophilic. Research has explored its copolymerization with ethylene and α-olefins, as well as its reactions in the Heck and RAFT polymerization processes.
