CAS: 67-63-0
Isopropyl alcohol Isopropyl alcohol (often called isopropanol or burning alcohol ) is a transparent, colorless, non-flammable solvent and disinfectant. It should be noted that, in addition to its use as a solvent, this alcohol is indispensable for domestic and industrial cleaning and disinfection. It is found almost everywhere. It is very popular household and industrial solvent after World War II.
Key Properties of Isopropyl Alcohol
● CAS: 67-63-0
● Molecular Formula: C₃H₈O
● Density: 0.786 g/cm³
● Boiling Point: 82.6 °C
● Flash Point: 12 °C
● Solubility: Miscible with water, ethanol, and ether
Physical Characteristics
It is a clear volatile liquid smelling of acetone, with a low boiling point of around 83°C, and partially miscible with water. In addition to its use in hand-sanitisers, it is a very good solvent for many purposes, and a particularly good cleaning solvent as it combines perfect solubility with a low boiling point (so it evaporates quickly), and it is miscible with water (meaning any cleaning action takes place effectively).
Applications in Agriculture
Disinfectant for Tools and Equipment: IUsed for the sterilization of agricultural tools as a disinfectant, field hygiene is preserved and the risk of crop infection is minimized due to the effective elimination of bacteria, fungi and viruses by IPA.
Significant Applications in Other Industries
● Food & Nutrition: Utilized for sanitizing food processing equipment and surfaces.
● Personal care: commonly used as an antimicrobial ingredient in hand sanitisers and face and body products.
● Construction: Acts as a solvent in adhesives and sealants, improving bonding performance.
● CASE (Coatings, Adhesives, Sealants, and Elastomers): Enhances formulation efficiency in various coating applications.
● Pharmaceutical: Serves as a solvent for medications and antiseptics.
● Industrial Hygiene Cleaning: With the high risk of cross-contamination, these were ideal for cleaning and disinfecting tools and surfaces in industrial settings.
● Plastics & Rubber: Functions as a solvent in the manufacturing of various polymer-based products.
● Oil & Gas: Employed in cleaning and maintenance processes for equipment.
