CAS: 110-54-3

Hexane, a clear liquid derived from petroleum, is largely composed of six carbon atoms and 14 hydrogen atoms. These compositional specificities are the primary reason why hexane is colourless and flammable with a distinctive odour, making it ideal and widely used for a host of industrial purposes. For instance, it has long been a vital component of industrial processing, as it can be used to extract vegetable oils, and it’s a solvent for various cleaning and dissolving purposes. Because it is used often for its standardised and defined compositional attributes, it must fall into a classification in order to be understood as a commercially successful entity. Specifically, hexane is an aliphatic hydrocarbon, similarly categorised by other aliphatic hydrocarbons that tend to have straight- or branched-chain patterns of hydrocarbons. This categorisation is a primary and key reason why hexane exhibits certain behaviours and is compatible with a number of other compounds used for various purposes.

Key Chemical Properties of Hexane

●           CAS: 110-54-3

●           Molecular Formula: C6H14

●           Density: 0.6548 g/cm³

●           Boiling Point: 68.7 °C

●           Flash Point: -22 °C

Physical Characteristics

It has a relatively low viscosity (corresponding to low thickness) and high volatility. Hexane is insoluble in water but miscible with other organic solvents, and is therefore an excellent solvent for extraction procedures, chemical reactions as well as in cleaning.

Applications in Agriculture

In agriculture, hexane is used as a solvent in oil extraction – the main application being the removal of edible oils from seeds and nuts. This practice is necessary to produce any cooking oil, as hexane is readily absorbed into plant material, facilitating a higher output and better-quality oil extraction. It is also employed in formulating agricultural chemicals to improve the delivery of pesticides.
