Tartaric Acid Additive for Construction and Industrial Use

Tartaric acid is a naturally produced organic compound occurring with an anti-agglomeration additive, mainly used as a set retarder in cementitious materials. Its use is widespread in the construction industry, specifically in the production of dry-mix products, plasterboard, and glass fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC). The additive prevents the clumping of the further added tartaric acid by timely dispersal into the mixture, ensuring homogeneity and consistency. This gives extra working time before the paste hardens, especially in hot climates wherein the working time is extensively prolonged so as to render application and performance more comfortable. Historically, tartaric acid has become crucial for mixing cement and concrete and providing flexibility in working time for building bigger structures. The use of tartaric acid in the construction industry has rapidly transformed into one of its de facto statuses because of the quality and durability it adds to the material. Fun Fact: The anti-agglomeration additives in combination with tartaric acid improve the usability in hot climates by sending a solid lashing to the cement beneath, and hence the mixture takes more time to set.
