PP fibers (Polypropylene Fibers) are simply known as PP fibers. They are synthetic fibers that originate from the polymerization of propylene monomers. Apart from strength and good resistance to chemical attack, while being lightweight, these fibers contribute to the improvement of durability and performance characteristics of different construction materials. Compared to other fibers, polypropylene fibers are non-corrosive; therefore, they are applicable as reinforcement to concrete and in other industrial applications. Besides construction, where they have been applied in reinforcing the structural integrity of concrete, the other industries also apply the fibers for applications such as crack mitigation and enhancement of durability.

These fibers have been familiar to the construction industry since the 1960s, their introduction. They later became the preferred reinforcement for concrete due to specific qualities, such as water resistance, weathering, and the action of most solvents. With advancement in this technology, supply and demand for polypropylene fibers grew, particularly in durable and sustainable buildings.

Properties Chemical of PP Fibers (Polypropylene Fibers)

●       CAS Number: 9003-07-0

●       Molecular Formula: [CH2CH(CH3)]n

Physical Properties

Smooth and flexible texture, easy to handle and apply in various formulations, with a stable and uniform surface.

Milky white color, which can be dyed for specific applications.

Linear and uniform structure, contributing to high tensile strength and low moisture absorption.

Lightweight, making handling easier and reducing the weight of composite materials.

High flexibility, ideal for adapting to structural movements without losing integrity.

Excellent resistance to tension and abrasion, making it suitable for demanding applications with high wear.

Construction uses

PP fibers are used extensively in construction for the reinforcement of materials; other structural properties can be improved. In concrete reinforcement, use isincreased for impact and damage resistance, preventing failure in precast concrete and industrial pavements. Shotcrete: Often used during tunnel construction, retaining walls, and swimming pools, rubberized, general-usage repair products allow for a stronger finish that is resistant to cracking. Asphalt reinforcement: offers increased durability in the treatment of pavement by reducing cracking and improving fatigue resistance. Soil stabilization: This is used to prevent erosion and improve the stability of slopes.

Other Applications

●       Thick plastics and rubber: Fiber reinforced plastics (FRP)are used to increase the strength and impact resistance of aerospace and automobile applications.

●       Textile industry: The products find application in the making of carpeting, upholstery, and sportswear owing to their durability and resistance to stains.

●        Packaging industry: Strength and durability provided in bags, wraps, and other types of packaging materials.

●        Renewable energy: These fibers are being used in turbine blades for wind energy because of their light weight and durability.

●       Motor vehicle industry: Used for interior trim parts; also in subassemblies such as doors, seats, and linings, because of outstanding strength at a low density.

●       Medical uses: Medical products such as sutures and surgical materials used it extensively, while also gaining a strong rating for biocompatibility.
