CAS: 95-47-6

Orthoxylene (o-Xylene) is a clear, flammable liquid that belongs to the hydrocarbon family. It is one of three variations (isomers) of dimethylbenzene. Thanks to its unique molecular structure, it is particularly effective in manufacturing phthalic anhydride, a key component used in many chemical processes. This compound plays a critical role in producing resins, solvents, and other industrial materials. Orthoxylene is known for its reliability in large-scale chemical production, distinguishing it from other xylene isomers due to its more targeted industrial applications.

Application in the Plastic & Rubber Industry

Orthoxylene plays a significant role in synthesizing phthalic anhydride that is a core feedstock for plasticizer via the reaction with ethylene dichloride in the Plastic & Rubber sector. Plasticizers are added to plastics to make them more flexible and long-lasting, absolutely needed for general-use products. In addition, Orthoxylene can be used in the production of polyester resins which is important for automotive and construction fiberglass composite. Its synthesis in the manufacture of synthetic rubbers not only endows a degree of durability to the products but actually makes it compulsory for the creation of long lasting, high-performance rubber.

Other Industries Where It Is Applied

●     Oil & Gas: o-Xylene is used in solvents and refining processes to enhance oil extraction efficiency and product purity.

●     Construction: It plays a crucial role in alkyd resins for protective and decorative coatings used in construction materials.

●     Coatings, Adhesives, Sealants, and Elastomers (CASE): Extensively utilized in the manufacture of high-performance adhesives, sealants and coatings targeted for industrial as well as consumer applications.

●     Lubricants and Greases: Imperative for their lubricity and life performance in the extreme.
