Styrene is a linear aromatic organic compound used in chemical industry
mainly used as monomer for the production of various plastics and resins. It
comes from petroleum or ethylene. It was isolated by German chemist August
Wilhelm von Hofmann in the mid-19th century, from natural pine resin although
its true industrial production history began in 1920s. Styrene is famous due to
its high propensity of getting polymerized, which leads to polystyrene, which
is one of the most commonly used plastics used in packaging, toys articles etc,
common products. Styrene is also a basic feedstock for elastomers, expanded
polystyrene resins and thermal insolation materials.
