DESCRIPTION
Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol, naturally found in fruits like apples and pears, and produced industrially from glucose. It is a white powder or viscous syrup, highly soluble in water, and about 60% as sweet as sucrose. Sorbitol is stable both thermally and chemically, and acts as a humectant in processed foods. It is primarily used as a sweetener in sugar-free products such as chewing gum, candies, and frozen desserts, as well as an osmotic laxative for constipation. While generally safe, excessive consumption can lead to laxative effects and gastrointestinal discomfort.
